The Bulk Buying Guide: How to Buy Nuts, Spices & Dried Fruit in Bulk (and Actually Save)

Buying in bulk is the single easiest way to cut your grocery cost per pound on pantry staples — but only if you buy the right things, in the right amounts, and store them properly. Here's everything we've learned from decades of packing bulk nuts, spices, and dried fruit for families, restaurants, and businesses.

Why bulk is cheaper (it's not a gimmick)

Small jars carry the same packing, labeling, and handling cost as big bags — spread over fewer ounces. When you buy a 5 lb or 10 lb pack, you're paying for product, not packaging. Across our catalog, bulk sizes typically run 30–50% less per pound than the smallest size of the same item.

What's worth buying in bulk

  • Whole spices — the bulk champion. Whole cumin seeds, peppercorns, and bay leaves hold flavor for 3–4 years. Shop spices & herbs →
  • Dried fruit — raisins, dates, apricots, and cranberries keep for months and disappear fast in lunchboxes and baking. Shop dried fruit →
  • Nuts — buy bulk if you snack daily or bake; store the extra in the freezer to keep the oils fresh. Shop nuts →
  • Trail mix & snacks — for offices, camps, and road-trip families, 10 lb bags outlast any grocery run. Shop trail mix →
  • Candy — for events: candy buffets, favors, and holidays are dramatically cheaper by the pound. Shop bulk candy →

How much should you order?

  • Daily snacker: a 5 lb bag of nuts lasts one person about 2 months at a handful a day.
  • Baking household: 5 lbs of chopped nuts or dried fruit covers a full holiday baking season.
  • Office or classroom: plan roughly 1 lb of snacks per 4 people per week.
  • Events: for candy buffets, 0.25–0.5 lb per guest; for Jordan almond favors, 1 lb per 18–20 guests.
  • Restaurants & food businesses: start with 10 lb packs of your top 3 spices — the per-pound savings compound fast.

Storage: the part everyone skips

Bulk only saves money if nothing goes stale. Three rules:

  1. Airtight beats everything. Transfer opened bags to sealed containers — oxygen is the enemy.
  2. Cool, dark, dry. Heat and light fade spices and turn nut oils rancid. A pantry shelf away from the oven is perfect.
  3. Freeze the overflow. Raw nuts keep up to a year frozen; dried fruit and whole spices do beautifully in a cool cupboard.
